VERO BEACH, Fla. (May 11, 2006) – Swimming, games and art and crafts highlighted VNA Hospice’s Camp Chrysalis, a children’s bereavement camp held April 22 at Gifford Youth Activity Center and Gifford Aquatics Center.
Twelve children attended the day camp, where they interacted with other children who have experienced the loss of a loved one and discovered they are not alone in the grieving process. Bereavement counselors, volunteers and activity leaders trained in bereavement support led camp activities and projects for the children.
“My son really enjoyed Camp Chrysalis and he is looking forward to going to the next camp in October,” said Liz Leveton. “He met other children going through the same thing as him – the loss of a parent – and he realized he wasn’t alone.”
Camp Chrysalis is held twice a year, with the next camp scheduled for Oct. 28 at Life for Youth Ranch. The camp is free and open to all Indian River County children ages 7-12 and eligibility is not limited to those previously associated with VNA Hospice. Camp Chrysalis is sponsored by John’s Island Community Service League, Rotary Club of Orchid Island and Quail Valley Charities.
