VERO BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2006) - To celebrate National Home Care Month, the Visiting Nurse Association is hosting its second annual Senior & Caregiver Health Fair on Friday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Ave. Admission is free and the fair is open to the public.
The event will include health screenings, community resource booths, educational materials, consultations, door prizes and refreshments.
"Staying healthy can be a challenge for our community’s aging population. The goal of this fair is to provide practical health information to seniors and caregivers on various health issues and resources available to assist them. We’ll offer attendees a wide variety of useful information, as well as screenings and programs designed to keep them active, healthy and independent - which is part of VNA’s wellness mission," said Sharon Broome, VNA president and CEO.
Among the free screenings are blood glucose, blood pressure, vision, cholesterol and glaucoma. For blood glucose and cholesterol screenings, it is necessary to fast from midnight on for the most accurate readings. Information will be provided on area resources for seniors such as support groups, advance directives, stroke prevention, mental health, Medicare drug coverage, and volunteer and training opportunities. Additionally, VNA nurses will be available to answer questions on health and safety issues.
Flu shots will be provided by the VNA at the health fair as part of its Shoo the Flu program. Flu shots cost $28, and pneumonia shots cost $44. Clients who bring their Medicare or Health First Medicare HMO card will have no out-of-pocket expense at the time of immunization.
