Self-Care is Not Selfish

Our mothers taught us to always think of others and put the needs of others first. This may sound strange, but it’s OK to put yourself first! If we don’t take care of ourselves, we can’t be fully present to care for others. Write a prescription for your well-being. Consider the things you enjoy and tailor activities to meet your needs. Here are three things to consider about self-care.

Self-care is a good habit
When we build self-care into our daily routines, we become more emotionally, spiritually and physically centered. We’re more focused, aware of our day and better able to manage our time. We feel happier and more at peace with the world around us. Maybe you’ve been wanting to visit with friends, learn a new hobby, start a work-out program, swim, walk or even just have some down time on the couch with a good book. Whatever you’ve been wanting to do, make today the day you put one activity on your calendar that’s just for you.

Self-care reduces stress
Finding activities that we enjoy, that allow us to escape the day-to-day routines, stimulate parts of our brain that help us experience joy, contentment and allow us to feel a sense of peace. Self-care doesn’t mean our responsibilities will magically go away, it means that we will be better equipped to handle what comes along on a daily basis. A regular self-care routine becomes an outlet, allows us to just let go and take the time to breathe and live in the moment.

Self-care helps the body
The body’s response to stress is producing hormones which gives us additional energy boosts when we need it. On-going stress can lead to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, digestive issues and even acne. Self-care combats stress by releasing different hormones which produce feelings of pleasure and joy. Self-care physically helps balance our body’s response to stress.

The prescription for self-care is easy! Figure out what you enjoy and make the time to do it!
